Cowboys Drubbed in Austin 42-7 by: Justin Waganer September 30, 2000 Roy Williams exacted revenge on Oklahoma State for the drubbing the Cowboys handed out last January. OK, so he wasn't the Roy Williams in a suit and tie and he wasn't a Jayhawk, but he opened the floodgates in the 3rd quarter of the Longhorns 42-7 drubbing on Saturday afternoon. Bob Simmons talked of his team needing to "execute" their game plan to win this one. Instead his team was executed, a common practice to Longhorn fans, to the tune of 42-7, and a second half 32-0 dominant performance by Texas. The Poke offense exploded for seven points in the conference opener, ending a seven quarter no touchdown streak after blocking a Texas punt. OSU looked to be opening up the offense on the first play with a reverse that went for 17 yards and the Cowboys threw 16 passes in the first half. However, the Cowboys couldn't take advantage of chance after chance in the first half. Oklahoma State threw the ball 16 times in the first half and trailed 10-7 at halftime. The Cowboys threw the ball seven times in the second half and lost the second half 32-0. Coincidence? I think not. "We completely dominated the second half," said Texas Head Coach Mack Brown. Yes, the Longhorns did. Here's some numbers for you. Rush Yards in 2nd half: Texas 137 - OSU 28. Pass Yards in 2nd half: Texas 185 - OSU 65. Tony Lindsay 7-21 for 73 yards no TD's. Major Applewhite 15-28 for 291 yards and 3 TD's. "You go into halftime thinking you should be tied," remarked Bob Simmons after the game, "You come out in the third quarter and the one thing you can't give up is a long pass and that's what happened." Well, unfortunately for the Cowboys, Coach Simmons was right. After the teams swapped three and out series' Applewhite found Roy Williams for a 96 yard TD pass on 3rd and 15. Then, the stampede. The Pokes fumbled the second play of the ensuing series and fell behind 20-7. OSU found consistency by yet another pathetic three and out. Applewhite then found Ellis in the end zone and it was 26-7 (2 point conversion failed). The Cowboys couldn't take advantage of a 27 yard screen to Tatum Bell then Bell and Lindsay bobbled a handoff and Texas recovered. The Longhorns made it 29-7 and OSU backup QB Aso Pogi entered. Pogi was greeted by a false start, a sack, and a throw away to avoid a sack to make it 3rd and 29 at the OSU 15. Pogi hit Marcellus Rivers for 28 yards and led to a 4th and 1 at the Longhorn 43. Aso audibled into the option and was stuffed. Pogi would not see the field again. Texas would sandwich TD's around yet another Cowboy three and out and the 42-7 rout was over.
