Cowboys Show Promise in Tough Loss to Southern Miss September 1, 2001 by Jason Waganer Executive Editor
Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Turnovers spoiled the much anticipated debut of Les Miles' Oklahoma State Cowboys football team. The Cowboys, with four fumbles, lost to Southern Mississippi 17-9 on a rainy day in Hattiesburg.
However, even though the Cowboys lost a tough contest, there were many positives for Cowboys fans throughout the game. At times during the game, sophomore QB Aso Pogi looked like an All-Big 12 player. Pogi was 26 of 38 for 294 yards. He showed poise and leadership that the Cowboys will need if they are to compete for a bowl birth.
The Cowboys defense also looked good for the majority of the game. The defense held the Golden Eagles to 53 yards on the ground. However, Southern Miss Senior QB Jeff Kelly threw for 277 yards and a touchdown. The Cowboys pass coverage was ok considering Kelly is a very smart, experienced quarterback.
On offense, the Cowboys looked very good at times, but simply had too many errors. The OSU offensive had 339 total yards, but turned the ball over several times in drives that looked like scoring opportunities.
Cowboy fans should be patient, this team has talent and could upset a team or two before the season is complete. Watch for the Pokes to clean up the turnovers next week and steamroll Louisiana Tech.
