Cowboy's Prep for 2002

August 14, 2002

Oklahoma State practices for the 2002 season haven't been ideal due to weather and the lack of an indoor facility.  However, the real concerns are starting to rise in the form of academic ineligibility, something the Pokes know all to much about.

The NCAA Clearinghouse is causing headaches for the Cowboys again when speaking of the eligibility of Lance Carson and Sam Mayes.  Mayes appears to have met the requirements for the upcoming season, but some of the fine print is making OSU approach the NCAA from the clause for "earnest effort" towards a degree.

Due to the rain on Tuesday, Oklahoma State altered the practice schedule to three-a-days, but still had to cut the night practice short because of lightning.  Tuesday morning practice was moved to the Center of International Trade Development for a walk through.  Gallagher-Iba was available, but Coach Les Miles said, "it's a better facility for us.  It's bigger.  And if we scuff up the floor we don't have any problems."

The Pokes will have a scrimmage tonight at 7 p.m. that will be closed to the public and a "mock game" on Saturday at 7 p.m. that is open to the public.  Miles said they plan to scale back the Wednesday scrimmage due to injuries.

"We had planned to do a lot of ones vs. ones, but because we're banged and bruised I'm not certain that's the right thing," Miles said. "We'll have to talk it over as a staff. We don't want to get anybody else hurt. We want to go live but not put at risk guys we're counting on."

Wide receiver John Lewis will not scrimmage on Wednesday due to a bad hamstring, but will play in Saturday's mock game.  Three players, Seymore Shaw (stress fracture), Doug Koenig (ankle), and Lance Carson (knee) will miss both the scrimmage and mock game.

Aso Pogi has reiterated that he is not at all thinking of transferring due to the loss of reps after the injuries he sustained in an off-season car accident.  Pogi insists he is 100% and plans to continue his streak of 17 consecutive games starter this, his junior season.
