2003 College Football Preview

Oklahoma State Schedule Analysis

by Justin Waganer

August 11, 2003

The last time that Oklahoma State went bowling they promptly followed it with a 5-6 season to be followed by another 5-6, a 3-8, and a 4-7 until finally getting back to a bowl a year ago.  Can the Cowboys make 2002 the breakout season of an up-and-comer or was it just another blip on the radar?

1.  Nebraska in Lincoln-  August 30, 2003

The curse of the Husker was lifted in 2002 when the Pokes defeated Nebraska 24-21 in Stillwater to put OSU on the fast track to being bowl eligible.  This one is tremendous for both schools, Nebraska to prove 2002 was a fluke and the Pokes to prove that it wasn't.  My guess is that Rashaun Woods makes a game winning catch in the final minute, OSU 28- Nebraska 27.  Oklahoma State 1-0

2.  Wyoming in Stillwater- September 6, 2003

Wyoming's chances of winning this game are comparable to the chances of Jeremy Shockey attending an Elton John concert, slim and none.  Wyoming has been terrible since the departure of Dana Dimel and expect 2003 to be no different.  OSU 52- Wyoming 17.  Oklahoma State 2-0

3.  SW Missouri State in Stillwater- September 13, 2003

The rule of college football applies here, if you have two directional coordinates and a State, Tech, or A&M attached to your name, you suck.  OSU 66- SWMSU 7.  Oklahoma State 3-0.

4.  SMU in Dallas- September 20, 2003

Some of you may laugh and if you are Oklahoma State fans this may just flat tick you off, this will be a game.  Granted, SMU was terrible in 2002, but they have a returning, talented quarterback returning in Richard Bartel and Phil Bennett will pull out all the stops in hope of a shocker on his home field.  In the end, too much Fields, Woods, and Bell.  OSU 31- SMU 17.  Oklahoma State 4-0

5.  La. Lafayette in Stillwater- October 4, 2003

The Ragin' Cajuns throw a kink into the theory represented in game #3 as they were previously known as SW Louisiana State.  Here is the First Amendment to the "you suck if" rule, if you are Louisiana University at, fill in the blank, you suck.

OSU 61- La. La. 10.  Oklahoma State 5-0

6.  Kansas State in Stillwater- October 11, 2003

This is where Oklahoma State throws themselves into the mix of a Big 12 title run with a victory.  However, Kansas State will be able to do what Oklahoma couldn't last season, get to Josh Fields and consistently move the football.  The Pokes will hang around and have a chance to win late, but K-State continues their hex.  OSU 17-  KSU 24.  Oklahoma State 5-1

7.  Texas Tech in Stillwater- October 18, 2003

After a disappointing loss at home usually comes a letdown and for the first half of this one the Cowboys will feel it.  Always remember, as comebacks were possible against Billy Tubbs run 'n gun basketball teams, so are they against Mike Leach's fun 'n gun football teams.  O-State roars back from a 28-10 deficit to win.  OSU 38- Tech 35.  Oklahoma State 6-1

8.  Texas A&M in College Station-  October 25, 2003

As most teams do, Oklahoma State will run into the football equivalent of a buzz-saw as the 12th Man and Dennis Franchione prove to be terrible hosts.  Franchione, with all his faults, knows the important games on the schedule and he knows that this is integral to his team maintaining power in the South.  OSU 24- A&M 41.  Oklahoma State 6-2

9.  Oklahoma in Norman-  November 1, 2003

I'll say it before anyone else does, "they've already done it once in Norman," or "they've done it twice in a row, haven't they proved themselves?"  I'll also say this, they can't do it again, can they?  OSU 22-  OU 21.  Oklahoma State 7-2

10.  Texas in Stillwater-  November 8, 2003

You can still hear the screams from Stillwater late at night, "One freakin' missed extra point!"  That's how close the Pokes were to going to Houston a few weeks earlier last year, instead they lost a heartbreaker 17-15 and saw it in their nightmares much the way Sooner fans did Rashaun Woods in 2001.  This year the Cowboys struggle to recover from the three-peat in Bedlam.  OSU 21- Texas 31.  Oklahoma State 7-3

11.  Kansas in Lawrence-  November 15, 2003

Mark Mangino has just asked himself for the 10,000th time, "what the hell was I thinking?" and for the 10,000th time he had no answer.  OSU 51- Kansas 27.  Oklahoma State 8-3

12.  Baylor in Waco-  November 22, 2003

Assuming that Baylor is still a part of the Big 12 when this is published, Baylor sucks.  OSU 55-  Baylor 14.  Oklahoma State 9-3
