Oklahoma Can Win National Title...Win or lose against A&M by: Jason Waganer November 2, 2000 The Oklahoma Sooners currently sit in the driver's seat for the college football National Championship. However, even with a loss to the Aggies next weekend in College Station, the Sooners could conceivably still play for the National Championship. Let's consider the options. If Oklahoma was to lose a close game to the Aggies, lets say by less than a touchdown, chances are they would drop to four or five in the BCS rankings. That would leave Florida State, Nebraska, Florida and either Virginia Tech or Miami ahead of them. With that the case, Florida and Florida State still have to play in the final regular season game of the year. Let's just say that the Gators get the Seminoles in Tallahassee. Then the Gators lose in the SEC Championship and OU defeats Nebraska in the Big 12 championship. The Sooners would be right back in the mix. Confused yet? Let's try another option. Ok, OU loses to A&M, Florida State loses to Clemson, Clemson loses to South Carolina, Virginia Tech loses to Miami and Florida loses to Florida State. The Sooners then would be right back to the #1 or #2 spot in the polls with a great shot to be in the title game. And another off the wall scenario would be if A&M beats OU and runs the table, the Aggies would play in the Big 12 championship. Then let's say that Clemson beats FSU, FSU beats Florida, Virginia Tech beats Miami and Pittsburgh or Syracuse beats Miami. Then Nebraska wins over K-State and then beats A&M in the Big 12 Championship. Could that make for an OU-Nebraska match up in the Orange Bowl for the National Championship? It sounds far off, but with the wackiness of this season, would it really surprise you?
