Hybl Makes Sense August 18, 2001 by Justin Waganer Senior Sports Writer Last fall it made sense, last spring it made sense, and after all of the excitement of the race for two-a-days it still makes sense. As odd as it may sound to some, White as the number two guy makes sense as well. White has enjoyed the competition and taken it on using such words as "fun" and "exciting". Hybl took it more seriously and for good reason, after all the reason he is here is because he lost this kind of battle to Quincy Carter a few years ago at Georgia. So if you wanted one to continue to push the other White's youth and enthusiasm in the situation will help the team realize even more that this was right. Besides, who knows if Hybl would have wanted to stick around or head off to a Murray State like Justin Fuente and just play out his college career. White is Oklahoma born and may be more willing to take a position change as well. Next season, if Hybl is successful in 2001, White could conceivably be moved to defense where he dominated in high school and play a safety role allowing Brent Rawls to move in to the two spot after Hybl to prepare for his chance in 2003. Besides these reasons, Hybl appears to be better suited for the Oklahoma attack that they want to employ this season. Had it been Stoops first year this year White may have gotten the nod. In scrimmages he took more chances and went deep a little more than Hybl. Nate is much more decisive and less prone to making a big mistake and with the defense being as strong as it is this season, that's what the coaches want. Someone to take them down the field, make progressions, and not turn the ball over. After naming Hybl the starter on Thursday Stoops stated, "I think he had one interception through our entire camp and that includes passing drills and scrimmages. That's more than 600 attempts." If those numbers are true then the decision for this years team was a no-brainer, its Hybl. With all the talent that returns around him for the 2001 slate, you want the guy who knows the offense and doesn't take as many risks. Schnellenberger Strikes Again....and Again. First, Howard Schnellenberger had a lineman go down on Wednesday afternoon in practice and heat was believed to be a factor. Schnellenberger, who led Oklahoma to a tremendous 5-5-1 success in 1995 and was outscored 98-10 in his final three games, is now the head coach of the Florida Atlantic Owls of division 1-AA. Next, Schnellenberger released the school's official artwork that any wildlife foundation would be proud of with a fine picture of Colonel Sanders himself as the biggest image in the marvel of the creative mind. You have to wonder just how good the Owls feel about a guy starting a program from scratch that managed to take a respectable program and put it in reverse. However, they do feel good about their young talented offensive coordinator Jack Daniels and the new deal for Howard's coaching show entitled, Miller Time.
