Hybl Named OU Starter after Final Scrimmage August 16, 2001 by Staff Reporter
Norman, Okla. -- OU Head Coach Bob Stoops today named Junior Nate Hybl the starting quarterback for the Sooners' opener against North Carolina. Stoops said the decision was made after discussing the situation with quarterbacks coach Chuck Long and offensive coordinator Mark Mangino.
"We just feel that Nate has earned the right to be the starter," Stoops said. "I think he had one interception through our entire camp and that includes passing drills and scrimmages. That's more than 600 attempts."
Stoops said both quarterbacks played well during the three scrimmages and practices so far, but Hybl's play was a little better.
"One of the reasons we feel so positive about Nate is that he did not earn the job through poor play on anyone else's part," said Stoops. "Jason has shown great qualities to also be a winning quarterback and starter, but Nate has done things a little better."
Stoops said both quarterbacks were made aware of the decision and both are handling it well.
"Both of them wanted to be the player we chose, but they understand the bigger picture," said Stoops. "This competition has helped them both improve and they recognize that."
