2001 Oklahoma Sooners
Coaching Staff & Philosophies

Head Coach: Bob Stoops, 3rd Year

Alma Mater: Iowa Overall Record: 20-5
Philosophy: The Bob Stoops philosophy on the surface is much like that of Al Davis, "just win baby."
Though with Stoops its not an "at all costs" mentality. Stoops knows that you must keep your assistants happy
by giving them time to see their family and paying them well, but is as good as it gets come gameday. Stoops
came in as a top-notch defensive coordinator, but did not forget about the offense as many D-Coordinators do.
Stoops brought in an exciting, popular style that attracts recruits and puts butts in the seats, as well as installing
his successful defense along with his brother Mike and co-defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

Defensive Coordinator:
Mike Stoops, Co-Defensive Coordinator, Secondary. (3rd Year)
Brent Venables, Co-Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers. (3rd Year)

Philosophy: The Stoops brothers and Brent Venables have put in a defense that must have speed to apply
more pressure on the quarterback. However, this is a style that does not put much stock in how much yardage
they give up overall, they put stock in points allowed. The most the Sooners have given up on their home field
since the Stoopses and Venables arrived is 16 to Kansas last season.

Assistants:
Bobby Jack Wright, Defensive Ends, Recruiting Coordinator. (3rd Year)
Jackie Shipp, Defensive Line. (3rd Year)

Offensive Coordinator:
Mike Mangino, Offensive Coordinator, Offensive Line. (3rd Year)

Philosophy: It appeared last season as if Mark Mangino's style wasn't all that different from Mike Leach
before him with the exception of putting more time into the running game. However, expect this season to be a
bit different. Mangino will still use the short passing game and multiple sets, but expect the Sooners to stretch
the field a bit more to adjust to personnel. This year's starter will have more arm strength and a bigger body,
which will make the deep ball more of a threat.

Assistants:
Cale Gundy, Running Backs. (3rd Year)
Jonathan Hayes, Tight Ends, Special Teams. (3rd Year)
Steve Spurrier Jr., Wide Receivers. (3rd Year)
Chuck Long, Quarterbacks, Passing Game Coordinator. (3rd Year)
