Sooner Recruiting Update January 10, 2002 by Mac Thompson Prep Sports & Recruiting Columnist
Well since it's basketball season, why not start with some basketball recruiting news. Oklahoma Coach Kelvin Sampson has got to be pumped on his current recruiting crop. In the early signing period, he signed Midwest City all-star DeAngelo Alexander, a 6-4 shooting guard. Then today, Sampson got a verbal commitment from Stroud standout Kevin Bookout.
Most recruiting services list Bookout as the states third best prospect behind Alexander and Midwest City start Sheldon Williams (who is going to Duke). I'm not sure before it's all said and done that Bookout isn't the best of the bunch. We'll see...
Okay, now on to the football news. Remember a couple of weeks ago when I told Sooner fans not to get all bent out of shape about the outlook of the recruiting year? Well it looks like I'm right. The Sooners are still in on some of the nation's best recruits, and OU should get its fair share.
This weekend, coach Stoops and company have a big time, and I mean big time, running back prospect in Edorian McCullough coming to town. McCullough is a 5-9, 190 pound speedster out of Garland, Texas. He's probably the best back in Texas and he's easily the fastest, running the 40 in 4.3 seconds.
Also in this weekend are offensive line prospects Bob Whittaker from Pennsylvania and Taylor Schuster from Sharyland, Texas. Both would be solid additions to the Sooner offensive lineup. Current commitments Noah Allen (QB) and Chris Messner (OL) will also be in town.
Then next weekend, the Sooners will host wide receiver prospect Jejuan Rankins from North Carolina and Kareem Brown, a big defensive end prospect from Miami, Fla.
And the Sooners are still in the hunt for linebacker prospects Zach Latimer of Colorado and Marvin Byrdsong of Texas.
The Sooners only have six, maybe seven, more scholarships to give. I expect the Sooners to fill those spots with some big time athletes. If they can get McCullough and Latimer, the class will probably move up to a top 5 in the country. So like I said a couple of weeks ago Sooner fans, stop worrying --- everything's going to be okay.
