Sooners Add Another DE Prospect

November 4, 2001

The Oklahoma Sooners got their second straight commitment from a defensive end with Chris Messner (6-7, 340, 4.8) of Frederick, Okla.  Messner is a big kid, with a nice wingspan. There's a good chance Messner will end up as an offensive lineman at OU.

Just last week, the Sooners added DE prospect Larry Birdine from Lawton to the 2002 class. The difference between Birdine and Messner is that Birdine is a weak side DR prospect while Messner is a strong side prospect. However, like I stated earlier, my sources say OU coaches like Messner more as an OL prospect than DE. If you look at the current Sooners, the coaches like speed on the ends and Messner might not be quick enough for that position.

The Sooners now have nine verbal, non-binding commitments for this year's class. Currently, most recruiting services and websites have OU anywhere from 10th to 20th nationally. If they can add a few of the big gunners they're after, especially on the defensive and offensive lines as well as a big time running back prospect, they'll probably move into the top five.
