Stoops Captures AFCA Award December 3, 2002 Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops has been named Region IV Co-Coach of the Year by the American Football Coaches Association. He also won the award in 2000. Stoops shared this year's honor with Boise State's Dan Hawkins. Other regional winners include Pittsburgh's Walt Harris, Georgia's Mark Richt, Iowa's Kirk Ferentz and Washington State's Mike Price. The OU coach led his team to a 10-2 mark and a tie for the Big 12 South Division title. The Sooners play Colorado Saturday in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship game. Oklahoma has been ranked among the nation's top 10 for the entire season. Stoops was the first coach to lead Oklahoma to bowl games in each of his first three seasons and the Sooners are eligible for a fourth straight bowl appearance this year. "What makes this award so special is that this is the only coach of the year award voted on exclusively by the coaches themselves," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "The winners are selected by the coaches they compete with and against on a daily basis." Information courtesy of SoonerSports.com
