If Stoops Leaves, Who is the New Skipper? January 5, 2002 by Jason Waganer Executive Editor
There's at least a 50 percent chance that Bob Stoops is headed to the University of Florida to succeed Steve Spurrier as the Gators head coach. If indeed it does happen, who will the Sooners choose as Stoops' successor?
The first names that come to mind are the current co-defensive coordinators Mike Stoops and Brent Venables. Both will be head coaches soon and Joe Castiglione would be ignorant not to consider one of them for the job. But which one? More than likely, Mike Stoops would get the nod because of his name and because he was previously assistant head coach.
But should Castiglione simply promote from within immediately or should he look outside the program first? Personally, I think he has to wait five to seven days to see what names out there are interested in the OU job. If a Mike Bellotti or a Larry Coker or some other big name expresses an interest, Castiglione has got to talk to them. Don't you think?
Well, who knows what will happen. Maybe, just maybe, all this speculation can go away if Stoops decides to stay in Norman and live out his college football coaching life as a Sooner. But maybe not. In any case, it's going to be one heck of an exciting weekend, huh?
