Late Charge Lifts Sooners to Victory February 19, 2002
Based on the talent that is accumulating in Waco the Oklahoma streak of dominance won't last forever, but it did reach 16 in a row on Tuesday night. Oklahoma (21-4, 10-3) pulled away from a talented, young Bear (14-12, 4-9) squad with a 10-0 run in the last five minutes to win 65-54.
Aaron McGhee turned in yet another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, including 3-4 from 3-point range and tied Ebi Ere and Hollis Price in leading the Sooners in scoring. John Lucas led Baylor with 19 points and fellow freshman Lawrence Roberts scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
For the second consecutive game the Sooners struggled to hold on to small leads for much of the game and then put in a killer run to cruise to a conference win. When the game was on the line the Sooners stepped up once again to play top-notch basketball.
"The last five minutes was good in every area we played ... shot selection, defense and rebounding," Sampson said. "It was a good road win."
A win on Saturday against Texas would all but lock up a two-seed in the Big 12 tournament as well as a trip to Dallas in the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament as a two-seed. The Sooners and Longhorns will meet up in Lloyd Noble Center on Saturday at 8 p.m. in a game nationally televised by ESPN.
