2001 Tulsa Golden Hurricane
Coaching Staff & Philosophies
Head Coach: Keith Burns, 2nd year
Alma Mater: Arkansas
Overall Record: 5-7 (2nd year)
Philosophy: Keith Burns has brought a tough, aggressive style team that has brought Hurricane fans from
a slumber. His confidence a year ago was taken as being cocky, but is now understood as many of his
statements have become reality. He brought the belief of needing defense to win championships and hopes to
improve upon a sporadic defense in 2001.
Jeff McInerney- Assistant Head Coach, Defensive Coord., Defensive Line (2nd year)
Philosophy: McInerney is recognized across the country for his ability to coach the defensive line, he'll need
it this year. A year ago the Hurricane blitzed regularly and used an eight man front to apply pressure to the QB.
However, in 2001 you may see a more conservative defense to aid a potentially strong offense.
Assistants: Dennis Allen- Defensive Secondary (2nd year)
Brock Berryhill- Outside Linebackers (2nd year)
Sammy Lawanson -Inside Linebackers (2nd year)
Jim Gilstrap- Offensive Coordinator, Running Backs (2nd year)
Philosophy: Gilstrap's offense is mainly run out of the one-back set, but the emergence of several threats in
the backfield may change that. A ground game that struggled a year ago saw a potential star emerge in the final
two games of 2000 in Eric Richardson. Richardson had over 400 yards in the final two games for the 'Canes and
will help an offense that needs the play-action threat to effectively use QB Josh Blankenship and WR Donald
Assistants: Dan Bitson- Receivers (2nd year)
Mark Hutson- Offensive Line (2nd year)
Barry Lunney, Jr.- Quarterbacks (2nd year)
Kenny Edenfield- Tight Ends (1st year)
