Welcome to Austin Where Reality is Overrated By Justin Waganer September 15, 2003
The next time you are in History 101 make sure you bring up that the North didn't beat the South badly, they just snuck out of the Civil War with a win. Also, when the Allies won World War II they didn't push the Axis around, they just got all the breaks. Or, if you get an average of 2.1 questions right on a series of tests convince your professor that you did pretty well. If this doesn't work, just call Mack.
Granted, I am just a poor University student (hence the lack of stories published here when August rolls around) but I can see a eternal optimist when I see one. After Saturday, I can even see an ignorant, eternal optimist. Here's some quotes for you following the University of Texas Longhorns 38-28 debacle against the Arkansas Razorbacks in Austin, Texas on Saturday.
"No way they beat us badly. If anything, they snuck out of here with a win." UT Quarterback Chance Mock after his Longhorns led for three minutes and twenty seconds on Saturday.
"I wouldn't say they pushed us around, I'd say they had more breaks than us." Texas Linebacker Derrick Johnson after his defense allowed 265 yards on the ground on 60 rushes, he had seven tackles.
"We knew going in that we were going to attack the perimeter and I think we did that well." Texas Offensive Lineman Tillman Holloway after his line paved the way for 62 yards on 29 carries.
"You lose early, and it's not OK, but it's fine as long as you win the rest of the year." Texas Receiver Roy Williams referring to losing early, hey, at least it helps you enjoy the State Fair more this year.
As Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News so eloquently put it on Sunday when he printed all of these quotes, "Austin, the capital of the state of denial." As Mark Twain put it, "Denial ain't just a river in Egypt."
What the heck is going on down there people? For the love of all things burnt orange why can't they just admit that they got waxed? When OU won two years ago in Austin, Mack Brown and Chris Simms let us all know that the wind was a bit tricky in the Cotton Bowl that day, you see, OU got to play in a special windless vacuum when they got the ball that day.
If you are an OU fan be just as happy with their record as you are with the fact that if they get beat Bob Stoops will be the first to admit that they got their butts kicked. In case you didn't know, that's exactly what he did after the Sooners got nailed 38-28 in Stillwater a year ago.
As Kierkegaard put it, "People demand freedom of speech to make up for the freedom of thought which they avoid." Every year we hear the new claims in the off-season of what Texas is going to do to finally live up to their potential, this year they were going to be tougher and run the ball. Saturday they did neither and we're only halfway through September. Take a lesson from Norman and your biggest rivals, shut up and prove it on the field, NO EXCUSES!
For the next two weeks there will be no excuses as Rice and Tulane line up to get the wrath of Mack & Company, but I ask all of you who are reading this to keep these poor kids in burnt orange in your thoughts. Pray for these kids, they just never get a break.
